Having attained the enlightened state, Buddhas skilfully manifest in countless forms to connect with and benefit living beings. Every aspect and attribute of a Buddha’s body has a symbolic meaning that reveals qualities and realizations we need to develop in order to make progress on the path to enlightenment.
In particular, the hand gestures, or mudras, of each Buddha indicate – either by their configuration or by what they are holding – the special qualities of that Buddha. By understanding, contemplating and taking to heart the meaning of the hand gesture, we plant special potentialities on our mind that strengthens our connection with that Buddha and creates the causes for us to attain their same enlightened qualities.
